Reading culture: NBTE trains Polytechnic librarians, information managers

 The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has commenced a three-day training in Kaduna state for librarians and information managers in Polytechnics and other institutions to promote reading culture among students and researchers.

The training organized in collaboration with Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN), was designed to equip the participants with basic knowledge and skills required to meet the ICT needs of library users.

 

Speaking at the opening of the training, the executive secretary of NBTE, Dr. Masa’ud Kazaure said the training will focus on deployment of e-library services to bring about change in the education sector as well as address critical areas of e-library in line with the current ICT driven world.

 

The training he also said is designed to build the capacity of librarians and information managers for quality and sustainable service delivery in theTechnical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. While he stated that the use of library books, documents and journals among others in academic research is going through transformation; he stressed the need for new thinking to attract patronage.

 

Masa’ud who was represented by the Director of Vocational, Technical and Skills Development, Abbati Mohammed noted that e-library is an innovative and creative way for libraries to remain relevant.

 

Earlier, the registrar of LRCN, Professor Michael Afolabi commended NBTE for recognizing the critical role of ICT in library and information management for TVET institutions across the country.

 

He stressed the need for libraries to key into ICT so as to remain relevant; noting that ICT is leading development in all sectors of human endeavour. He therefore called on government at all levels to provide the needed e-resources for libraries to enable them meet users’ needs.
