Real Madrid defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 match at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish La Liga side relied on captain Federico Valverde’s first half hattrick to sink Pep Guardiola’s side on Wednesday night.

Valverde dribbled past Gianluigi Donnarumma before slotting into an empty net for the lead on 20 minutes, doubled it seven minutes later with a low shot into the bottom corner.

The midfielder completed his hattrick on 42 minutes, the first of his career, to give Real a handsome 3-0 lead at the break.
Real Madrid missed the opportunity for a fourth goal when Vinicius Jr. saw his penalty saved by Donnarumma, and Real settled for the three-goal advantage going into the second leg.

In other games, Chelsea collapsed in the second half to suffer a 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Paris.

The Blues had pegged back PSG twice in the first half, Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernandez cancelled goals by Bradley Barcola and Ousmanne Dembele.

They, however, had no response for second half strikes by Vitinha and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s late brace.
