The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in Anambra State, Mrs Queen Agwu, barred journalists from covering the presentation of the certificate of return to House of Assembly members yesterday.

Journalists, who were at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday morning, were turned back from covering the event on the orders of the REC.

Earlier, the Acting Public Relations Officer of INEC, Dr Kingsley Agu, in a phone call with Daily Trust Saturday hinted that the REC would not entertain journalists on the day of certificate presentations.

According to him, the REC had instructed him not to allow journalists into the premise during the presentation.

All calls put to the REC and PRO, by the chairman of Anambra State correspondents chapel, Chuks Iluzie, were rejected.

Reacting to the incident, the chairman of Anambra State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, described the action as highly condemnable.

According to him, INEC is a public institution that must be opened for journalists to cover.
