The talked about wedding of the year was that of the President of the Actors guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima. She married Uche Egbuka on Friday Dec. 19th in Port Harcourt. Paul Okoye of the Psquare duo also married Anita Isama on 22nd March in Port Harcourt. Dr . Sid got married to his wife Simi Osomo on the 2nd of August in Lagos. Tiwa Savage who wedded Tee Billz had her grand wedding in Dubai on the 26th of April.
These weddings were well covered in local and international media.
Births
Nollywood star actress Mercy Johnson gave birth to her second child on October 15 at the St. Joseph Hospital, University of Maryland, Baltimore. Popular musician and photographer T.Y Bello, after nine years of marriage, gave birth to twin boys named Christopher and Christian in the US on October 11, 2014. The comedienne, actress, singer and compere Helen Paul on the 24th of November gave birth to her second child, a baby boy. The Idibias, 2face and Annie, also ushered in their second child, Olivia, on January 3, 2014, at Atlanta Georgia, USA. Caroline Danjuma gave birth to her 3rd child, a baby girl on the 13th of September 2014.
Politics
This year was quite an interesting one for entertainers as most of them went into politics. Kenny Saint Best joined the APC to contest for a spot in the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikeja Constituency 1. She however lost out in the primaries. Veteran actress, Kate Henshaw, ventured into politics to contest a seat to represent Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency under the PDP. She officially launched her campaign on July 19 which was her 43rd birthday. She too lost out at the primaries. Gongo Aso crooner, Abolore Akande, known as 9Ice also officially made public his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Ogbomosho North/South/Orire Federal Constituency of Oyo State in January but like his other contemporaries he lost out at the primaries. Anotehr entertainer who ventured into politics but also lost at the primaries is Dayo Adeneye aka D1. He vied to be a member of the Ogun state House of Assembly under APC.
The only entertainers who won their primaries to contest the elections in 2015 are Desmond Eliot who is contesting a seat in the Lagos State House of representative under the APC. Bukky Wright is another entertainer that would be representing the Abeokuta South Federal Constituency and will be contesting under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Events
Some of the most talked about events and celebrations that held this year included the Geneveive Pink Ball on cancer awareness , Media Mogul Mo Abudu’s 50th birthday gig, Kunle Afolayan’s October 1 movie premiere where attendees went old school, the Channel O music and video awards, the Headies awards, the Olamide Live in concert and best of all, Davido, who won over 25 awards this year. The president Actors guild of Nigeria Ibinabo Fiberesima also visited IDPs in Gombe where she distributed relief materials and food stuff from fellow actors. Top Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji was also honoured with a chieftaincy title at her hometown, Aboh, Mbaise, Imo State.
The release of the highly acclaimed ‘The Chairman’ album was a high point in the Nigerian music industry. The (arguably) best rapper in Nigeria M.I Abaga A.K.A Mr Incredible resurfaced after a 4 year hiatus and delivered a ground breaking album.
Deaths
Popular Kannywood comic actor Dan Ibro died after a protracted illness this year. His death left behind a huge gap in the movie industry in Kano and Kannywood.
The passing away of Amaka Igwe shook the entertainment industry. She was a successful film maker, director and actress. The late mother was popular for producing Funny TV; Fuji House of Commotion She unfortunately suffered an asthma attack en route Enugu with her husband and died.
Popular singer Kefee’s death was another death that shook the entertainment industry in 2014. The ‘Kokoroko’ singer unfortunately passed on in the US after allegedly suffering a pregnancy related disorder called, pre-eclampsia, however, close relatives insist that it was lung failure that took her life. She was in a coma for about two weeks before eventually passing on.
A popular radio presenter with Rhythm FM, Charles Bruce Chukwuma, popularly known as Chaz B died on the 22nd of November reportedly of kidney failure. Through his radio show “Sharing Life Issues with Chaz B“, he helped listeners face and resolve numerous difficult issues
