The Arewa Think Tank has called on political actors across Nigeria to embrace reconciliation and unity, citing the recent truce between governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume as a model for resolving internal disputes.
Convener of Arewa Think Tank Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, in a statement on Monday, urged political stakeholders across northern Nigeria and beyond to adopt similar approaches, stressing that unity remains critical to national stability.
“As Nigeria’s political landscape begins to realign ahead of 2027, the reconciliation between Alia and Akume stands out as a rare instance of rapprochement, one that could reshape party dynamics if its lessons are widely embraced,” the group stated.
Arewa Thin Tank described the reconciliation between the two Benue leaders as “a timely and commendable development” capable of strengthening party cohesion and governance if replicated nationwide.
It recalled that Alia and Akume had been locked in a prolonged political rift that spanned nearly three years, creating divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State but both leaders formally ended their differences on May 3, 2026, during a high-level meeting at the Government House in Makurdi.
Reacting to the development, the Arewa Think Tank said the resolution of the dispute underscores the importance of dialogue in Nigeria’s often fractious political environment.

“Political disagreements are inevitable in a democracy, but the ability to resolve them in the interest of the people is what defines leadership,” the group stated.
