Conceived as a response to the high spate of terrorism, militancy and inter-communal clashes that have threatened the nation, the event aims to achieve peace through a celebration of food from across Nigeria.

Managing Director, Abujafood.com, Miss Rahima Gambo, informed that the festival tagged, ‘Feast for Peace’ will aspire to unite Nigerians along the lines of unity, peace, humanitarianism, and good food.

Gambo disclosed that the non-profit event aims to raise funds by gathering Nigerians from all walks of life on December 10, 2011, for a day of feasting and festivities in “the City of Unity”, Abuja, which would be handed over to the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

“The Feast for Peace is a food festival, where guests can eat food from all their favourite Abuja restaurants and caterers. Family- friendly activities will be available to keep children entertained and an interactive exhibition of the activities of the Nigerian Red Cross Society will feature.  Funds raised will be donated to the Nigerian Red Cross Society to support their humanitarian endeavours, particularly towards those families displaced by communal clashes.

According to her, “Across the world there is a general consensus among cultures that eating together increases love and harmony between individuals and people. The act of eating together unites us, creating bonds and establishing relationships through a much loved daily ritual. Organising an event focused on food takes us back to the universal basis of what it means to be human-sharing and caring.”

Food, Gmabo said is a unifying factor in the country regardless of its over 150million people and its complicated and multifaceted entity.

The Feast for Peace is geared towards creating a light-hearted yet fitting atmosphere to forget where we are from and remember who we are; Nigerians. It is a chance for each of us to take individual responsibility to stand behind national peace and unity.

Gambo noted that the event will create a non-political context where Nigerians from all backgrounds and walks of life can unite for an important and urgent cause; to condemn tribalism, factionalism and violence.
