Dr Isah Jibrin, the Chief Medical Director, General Hospital, Minna has advised people to reduce their risk to contracting cataract, an eye disease by taking fruits regularly and also reduce their exposure to sunlight.
According to him, too much direct contact with the sun can cause cataract, which can lead to blindness.He also stressed that people should avoid unnecessary direct eye contact with the sun.
He said that due to the nature of our weather and climate change, the disease is very common in Nigeria and other tropical African countries.
The doctor urged people to imbibe the habit of regular check-up in order to live healthy.
“You know in this part of the world, people are not used to visiting medical practitioners for check up to know their health status. The eye is an essential part of the body which needs to be protected at all times. Medically it is advised that a person goes for an eye check up once every year. This will reduce the risk of eye diseases,” he said.
Most cases of blindness would have been prevented if people had sought medical advice from regular check up.
He added that at least 500 people suffering from cataract in all the 25 local government areas in Niger State will have free surgeries and treatment this month, adding that it is organised by the state government in collaboration with international health organisations.
Dr Jibril explained that the exercise is a pilot scheme aimed at reducing cataract disease among Niger people.
“It is estimated that there are more than 15,000 people that are infected with cataract disease, hence there is need to fight the scourge in the state,” he said.s
