Registrars of Colleges of Education across Nigeria have called for stronger administrative reforms, improved quality assurance mechanisms and greater stakeholder engagement to enhance governance and service delivery in the nation’s teacher-training institutions.
The call was made at the 65th Regular Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Conference of Registrars of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (CORECOEN), which commenced in Abuja.
The two-day conference, held at the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Conference Hall, brought together registrars and other stakeholders to deliberate on challenges facing the sector.
Declaring the conference open on behalf of the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, Mr. Adoyi Ofikwu described registrars as critical actors in the governance structure of Colleges of Education.
He urged participants to focus on practical resolutions that would enhance efficiency, transparency and service delivery.
According to him, “quality assurance remains the backbone of credible teacher education,” while policy compliance and stakeholder engagement are essential for sustaining institutional integrity and fostering collaboration.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthening governance and improving the performance of Colleges of Education in line with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Representing the Executive Secretary of the NCCE, Dr. Angela Ajala, the commission’s Director of Human Resource Management, Mr. Dauda Yabani, said registrars occupy a strategic position in ensuring accountability and compliance with regulatory standards.
He stressed that quality assurance remains central to the commission’s mandate and urged colleges to embrace accreditation and monitoring processes as tools for continuous improvement.
Yabani also underscored the importance of stakeholder engagement, saying collaboration among governing councils, staff unions, students, alumni associations, host communities and development partners was vital for institutional growth and sustainability.
He further encouraged Colleges of Education to adopt digital transformation and innovative administrative practices to address emerging challenges in the education sector.
Earlier, CORECOEN Chairman, Dr. Abdulkarim Bello Norde, said the conference theme, “Enhancing Quality Assurance, Policy Compliance and Stakeholders Engagement in the Administration of Colleges of Education in Nigeria,” was selected to address pressing issues affecting the administration of Colleges of Education.
Norde highlighted achievements of the outgoing executive, including the establishment of the Association of Nigeria College of Education Professional Administrators (ANCOEPA), the revival of the conference’s academic journal and improved collaboration with unions and other stakeholders.
He, however, identified inadequate funding, insecurity and occasional conflicts between registrars and chief executives as major challenges confronting the association.
The conference ended with the election of new officers, who were tasked with sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening professional standards and advancing effective administration in Colleges of Education nationwide.
