The Association for Fertility and Reproductive Health (AFRH) is set to provide guidelines on ethical practice and regulation of In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) practice in the country.
The association disclosed this during a briefing on its forthcoming annual conference slated for 24th -25th September, this year in Lagos with theme; ‘Role of Ethics and Regulation in IVF’.
Chairman of the organizing committee, Dr. Adewunmi Aderemi-Bero said the association chose the theme because of the effects and stigmatization of infertile couples.
According to him, it is important to have regulation and ethical practice guidelines in the field of medicine.
“Infertility treatment is not without complications hence it is important that care givers must be licensed to do so, and must be ready to practice ethically following specific guidelines to ensure the safety of our women,” he said.
He said a woman should not die in the process of having a child, saying the unborn child or product of fertility treatment deserves both maternal and paternal care.
There is need for regulation in the practice of infertility care because apart from the couples, the silent voice of the unborn child must be heard, he stated.
Some international experts in the field and over 500 delegates are expected to attend this year conference, according to Dr. Adewunmi.
Also speaking at the briefing, National President, AFRH, Dr. Faye Iketubosin said the aims of the association is to promote improvements in clinical practice through organizing teaching, training and continuing medical education activities.
Others include developing and maintaining data registries and implementing methods to improve safety and quality assurance in clinical and laboratory procedures.
“The association is a non-partisan, non-governmental association, geared towards the enhancement of and quality education service in reproductive health education, with emphasis on fertility services”, he said.
