The Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa (JMA) has attributed religion and tradition as limiting factors hindering the participation of Northern women in politics.

JMA National Secretary, Dr. Doshiya Barwa-Aboy, said this during the JMA’s 2022 convention/election of Kaduna State chapter in Kaduna.

“The challenges facing women are insecurity and complex; people look at women as second-class citizens, whereas religion and tradition are also affecting Northern women especially women in the rural areas.

“When a woman wants to step out, she will be cautioned to go back; some men do not want women to step out and hold key positions in politics especially, but when you look at it during election, women have the largest number of votes,” she said

She said the JMA was making efforts to ensure women and girls go to school, adding that women’s voices should be heard.
