Rev Akinde gave the admonition while delivering funeral sermon at the burial rites of the late Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos, Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe in Lagos.
Sofoluwe, 62, who was the 10th VC of Unilag died on May 12, 2012 after suffering multiple heart attacks.
At the funeral service was Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, his counterpart from Ekiti State, Governor Kayode Fayemi and the Delta State Deputy Governor, Prof Amos Ituamah and other prominent Nigerians.
In a sermon entitled, “What are you living for?” Rev Akinde maintained that the death of Sofoluwe demonstrated to all that whatever man acquires in life is useless when the person dies.
The officiating pastor warned those who chose to be desperate in search of power to be conscious of death because it may knock at the door anytime.
“People of God, what is it you are looking for in life? Is it fame, money or power? I know many of us in the world desperately look for power not minding how we get and what its consequence will be to us. All we are interested in is power and that is all. We forget so quickly that such power may turn out to be our albatross,” Rev Akinde said.
The pastor who was a close associate of the late VC disclosed to the congregation how the deceased used all modest approaches to vie and earn for himself the position of Unilag VC.
He described Sofoluwe as a great philanthropist: “Tokunbo has left us with a culture of service to humanity. He unilaterally sponsored the scholarship programmes for many students of CMS Grammar School with not many people knowing. Recently, from his pocket, he paid the sum of N350,000 to the principal of the school to sponsor a child’s education.”
In her remark, wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs Abimbola Fashola described the late VC as a gentle and a humble man who despite all he achieved, never looked down on others.
She said the entire people of Lagos and Nigerians will miss the erudite scholar.
Earlier in the day, a lying-in-state service was conducted for the late VC at the varsity’s sport centre, Akoka, Yaba.
After the church service, the body was taken to Ikoyi Vaults and Garden where it was interred.
