Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) defending champions, Remo Stars, fought back to inflict 2-1 defeat on debutants Kun Khalifat in the delayed MatchDay fixture played yesterday at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
One of the four privately owned clubs in the Nigerian topflight, newly promoted Kun Khalifat have adopted the home ground of Enyimba FC as their venue for now.
Based in Imo, Kun Khalifat started life in the topflight with an encouraging 0-0 draw away at former champions Rangers International in Enugu.
Although they were aiming to build on the away draw in their first home match, after taking the lead, Kun Khalifat couldn’t withstand the firepower of Remo Stars who rallied back for their first win of the season.
Henry Ezeonye scored Kun Khalifat’s first goal in the NPFL when he converted from the penalty spot in the 16th minute to raise hopes for a historic win but twenty five minutes into the second half, Ibrahim Abubakar equalised for the visitors.
Substitute Samson Olasupo then grabbed the match winner for Remo Stars in the 78th minute to leave the fans of Kun Khalifat with a bitter pill to swallow.
Remo Stars’ win brought to two the number of away victories recorded in MatchDay 2.
Katsina United had stunned Plateau United 2-1 in Jos as they recovered from their home defeat to Warri Wolves in their opening match of the season.
Next for Kun Khalifat is a trip to Ilorin to face Kwara United while Remo Stars welcome joint-leaders Warri Wolves to Abeokuta.
