The Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Bello Usman Kumo, has dropped his governorship ambition and backed the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Daily Trust reports Dr Jamil Isiyaka Gwamna recently emerged as the party’s consensus candidate.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Kumo said the APC has been making deliberate preparations to ensure electoral success in the forthcoming polls.

He noted that as a stakeholder in the party, he participated in the legislative processes that produced the Electoral Act 2025 (as amended), as well as internal party decisions regarding the adoption of either consensus or direct primaries for selecting candidates.

Kumo, who expressed interest in contesting the governorship seat, said he had awaited the party’s decision on the mode of primary election but chose to align with the consensus option after it was duly adopted and affirmed.

“With the consensus option validly adopted and affirmed in accordance with the party’s position, I am left with no better option than to toe the party line,” he stated.

He expressed support for the outcome of the APC congress in Gombe State, which produced a consensus governorship candidate, describing the process as legitimate and in line with party principles.

Kumo also reaffirmed his confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, describing both as committed democrats whose leadership should be supported.

“I hereby call on my teeming supporters and loyalists across the state to abide by the party’s position and work towards ensuring victory for all our candidates in the next elections,” he said.

He assured that he remains committed to party unity and the success of the APC in the 2027 general elections.
