The House of Representatives Committee on Nigeria–China Parliamentary Relations has expressed its strong support for the Global Governance Initiative announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus Meeting in Tianjin.

In a statement issued at the National Assembly in Abuja, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, described the initiative as a timely and visionary framework for addressing the challenges of global governance in a rapidly changing world.

Yakubu said the initiative’s focus on fairness, inclusivity, multilateralism and people-centred development aligns closely with Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities and its commitment to South–South cooperation.

He noted that the Global Governance Initiative offers a platform for countries of the Global South to play a more active role in shaping the rules and norms that guide international relations, ensuring that the perspectives of developing nations are given due weight in global decision-making.

He explained that the Committee is prepared to provide legislative and institutional backing to ensure that Nigeria’s participation in the initiative results in concrete policies and programmes that deliver tangible benefits to citizens.

According to him, the framework presents opportunities for deeper cooperation between Nigeria and China in renewable energy, the digital economy, technological innovation, infrastructure development and cultural exchange, all of which could help advance mutual development goals.

Yakubu stressed that such collaboration would not only support Nigeria’s national development agenda but also contribute to building a more balanced and inclusive international governance system that reflects the aspirations of emerging economies. He reaffirmed the Committee’s readiness to work closely with China and other partners to promote a governance model based on mutual respect, shared prosperity and sustainable development.

The statement concluded with a call for both domestic and international stakeholders to embrace the spirit of the initiative and work together towards a fairer and more equitable world order.
