The House of Representatives has said that it would strengthen its parliamentary relations with the Republic of Denmark for mutual benefits.
Chairperson of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Rep Nnenna Ukeje (PDP, Abia) stated this while playing host to a delegation of lawmakers from the Denmark parliament.
She said this became necessary in view of the trade investment between Nigeria and Denmark.
“The level of trade between Nigeria and Denmark is about $1 billion (N164bn). We’re transforming as a country, and our democracy is waxing stronger. We know your country has come a long way, so we want to strengthen our parliamentary relations with you so that we can develop at the same pace,” she said.
On the security challenges facing Nigeria, Ukeje told the Danish parliamentarians that efforts were on to bring insurgency and other criminalities to an end.
Earlier, leader of the Danish parliamentarians, Gjerskov Mette, said her country was so much concerned about the insecurity in Nigeria as well as environmental problems arising from oil exploration.
Meanwhile, the government of Denmark has disclosed its intention to open an embassy in Abuja and trade office in Lagos in August to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.
This was made known by a delegation of lawmakers from the Denmark parliament who visited the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali.
The delegation, led by Gjerskov Mette, said they are in Nigeria for consultation to improve human and women’s right and bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, among others.
“As we all know Nigeria is a super power in Africa with huge and great economy as well as a country with an impressive growth rate which was why we decided to improve our relation with the country,” Mette said.
Responding, Ambassador Wali noted Nigeria’s desire to improve relations with other countries, saying Nigeria needs such relationship.
