The House of Representatives yesterday postponed its planned debate on key proposals in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, ahead of voting scheduled for December 10 and 11.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu had on Tuesday announced at plenary that debates on the constitution amendment bills would take place yesterday and today. He urged members to be present for the sessions.

However, when the House resumed sitting yesterday, it only received the report of the Committee on Constitution Review, deferring consideration and debate until today.

The postponement was to allow lawmakers time to deliberate and adopt resolutions arising from a two-day discussion on insecurity in the country.

The constitution amendment report includes proposals such as the establishment of state police, special seats for women, independent candidacy, and specifying the timeframe for the submission of annual budgets by the president and state governors, among others.
