The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has demanded immediate and decisive action to rescue the schoolgirls abducted during an early-morning attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State.

In the attack, about 25 students were kidnapped, while the school’s head of security was killed.

In a statement jointly signed by Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda; Minority Whip, Dr. Ali Isa ; Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Madaki; and Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. George Ozodinobi, the caucus condemned the assault, describing it as devastating and unacceptable.

“We are extremely sad and heartbroken that innocent schoolgirls, eager to acquire education and become useful citizens, were kidnapped by groups of social misfits, vicious renegades, and irascible outlaws,” the lawmakers said.

Recalling a similar tragedy, the caucus noted that the incident was a painful reminder of the June 17, 2021 abduction of about 80 students and the killing of five teachers at Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri, also in Kebbi State.

The lawmakers warned that the fresh abduction poses severe psychological, health, social, and security consequences for the victims, their families, and the education sector in the state.

They called on both the Federal Government and the Kebbi State Government to take urgent and decisive measures to ensure the immediate rescue of the girls.

The caucus also urged the Armed Forces and all security agencies to intensify joint operations, rescue the abducted students, and ensure that the perpetrators are captured and prosecuted.

Expressing deeper concern over the escalating wave of insecurity across the country, the Minority Caucus cited recent violent attacks in Eruku, Kwara State, where terrorists killed several residents and abducted many others.

They noted that in recent months, Nigeria has recorded disturbing incidents of killings, abductions, and violence in Zamfara, Kogi, Kano, Benue, Plateau, and other states.

The statement noted that as a responsible and responsive group of lawmakers, the caucus will pursue necessary legislative actions to find “sustainable solutions to these worsening security challenges.”

The caucus extended solidarity to the affected families and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the voices of victims and vulnerable communities are heard at the national level.
