The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions on Wednesday adjourned its sitting to May 28 following the failure of the governors and speakers of Benue and Zamfara states to appear before it for the second time.
The committee is considering a petition seeking the National Assembly’s intervention to take over the legislative functions of the Benue and Zamfara state Houses of Assembly.
The petition, submitted by the Guardian of Democracy and Rule of Law and represented by Barrister Emmanuel Onwudiwe, was heard on Wednesday. Suspended lawmakers from both state assemblies were also present.
However, the absence of the governors and speakers stalled progress on the matter.

A total of 13 lawmakers have been suspended from the Benue State House of Assembly, while eight have been suspended in Zamfara State.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Kwamoti Bitrus Laori, informed those present that the committee had been served with court documents relating to the case.
He disclosed that the Benue State House of Assembly and its speaker, Hon. Aondona Hyacinth Dajoh, had filed Suit No. FHC/MKD/CS/146/2025 at the Federal High Court in Makurdi on May 5. The case is scheduled for hearing on May 19.
Hon. Laori further revealed that the leadership of the Benue State Assembly had written to the Benue caucuses in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, seeking dialogue over the unfolding situation.
In view of the pending court proceedings and the request for consultation, the committee resolved to defer its decision on the petition until May 28.
