The House of Representatives has raised concern over the increasing rate of road accidents and fatalities along the Kaduna Eastern Bye-Pass and the Kaduna–Zaria Highway, calling for urgent measures to protect lives.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Hussaini Mohammed Jallo, who lamented the frequent loss of lives on the highways currently under construction by Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company.
Jallo noted that the roads pass through densely populated communities, including Rigasa Bakin Ruwa, Danmani Junction, Kurmin Mashi Junction, Mando Motor Park, Maraban Jos, Unguwa Gwari, NDC Unguwa Kaji, GDSS Rigachikun, Farakwai, Jaji, Zaria-Aya and Kwarau Tasha, where rapid population growth has increased both human and vehicular traffic.
He observed that the highways have effectively split these communities into two, forcing residents, traders, students and commuters to cross busy lanes without designated pedestrian infrastructure.
According to him, the absence of pedestrian bridges, crossings and flyovers has created significant safety risks, turning the roads into death traps, particularly for schoolchildren, the elderly and traders.
Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently review the ongoing projects and incorporate pedestrian bridges and flyovers at identified high-risk points.
It also called on the ministry to collaborate with the Kaduna State Government to ensure that safety infrastructure is fully integrated into federal road projects within the state.
The House further urged the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Kaduna State Traffic Law Enforcement Authority to intensify public awareness campaigns and provide temporary pedestrian crossings pending the completion of permanent structures.
The Committees on Works and Legislative Compliance were mandated to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the affected highways and report back within four weeks.
