The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the circumstances leading to the mass failure of candidates in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) recently.

This followed the adoption of a motion on matters of urgent public importance moved by Rep. Adewale Adebayo at the plenary on Thursday.

Presenting the motion, he lamented that, many of the candidates travelled long distances to sit UTME examination at the centres.

He however noted that when the results were released, there was massive failure as admitted by the examination body, hence the need to investigate the circumstances leading to the unfortunate development.

However, Rep. Sada Soli Jibia while contributing to the motion stated that, while the development was a setback to Nigerians, the JAMB registrar should be commended for admitting that, there was a technical error and had apologised to Nigerians.

According to him, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has demonstrated integrity and increased the board’s revenue since his appointment as head of the examination body.

However, the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen who presided over the plenary, said the committee that will conduct the investigation should be left to decide whether to commend the JAMB registrar or not.

The motion was adopted after a voice vote put by the Speaker.

The House referred the motion to relevant Committees of the House and asked
JAMB to release results of under 16 students. It also urged the federal government to establish centres across all LGAs in the country.

Recall that, the results the 2025 UTME released by JAMB on May 9 showed that more than 70 percent of the candidates scored less than 200 points out of the 400 maximum obtainable points.

However, the JAMB registrar, had during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said the board undertook an early review and uncovered a major technical which affected the results of 379,997 candidates.
