The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to lift embargo on employment to tackle rising idleness among Nigerians.

This was sequel to a motion moved by Rep. Sani Bala during plenary on Wednesday.

The lawmaker said there was need for the federal government to lift the embargo amidst growing unemployment which resulted in rising poverty among Nigerians.

Presenting the motion, he said the organized private sector should also make more efforts to take up more jobs by filling existing vacancies in their establishments.

He said, if such measures are taken, they would reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari announced the embargo on recruitment into Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) during his budget presentation in October 2019.

He however lamented that, the President reiterated his stance on the existing embargo as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic and fall in global oil prices on Nigerians.

The House therefore urged the Head of Service of the Federation to declare existing vacancies in all federal government establishments.

It also called on the Federal Civil Service Commission to immediately embark on recruitment exercise to fill existing vacancies.
