Rerun: Voters decide fate of Kaduna Speaker, Dahiru Liman

Voters in five poling units in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State trooped out Saturday morning to decide the fate of Dahiru Liman as the representative of Makera Constituency as well as the speaker in the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

The election process  commenced on scheduled as election personnel and voting materials were  dispatched to the affected polling units.

The Electoral Officer in charge of  South Local Government, Alhaji Usman Mohammed Bena, told journalists that there were no challenges as for distribution of materials and believed the exercise would go smoothly.

The voting exercise commenced at 8.15 am at polling unit 005 located at Government Day Secondary School, Barnawa, which has 750 registered voters.

Liman’s main opponent in the election is Solomon Nuhu Katuka of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

There was an appreciable turnout of voters after the exercise kicked off.

Some election observers from APC and PDP expressed satisfaction with the election process.

In Kakuri Gwari voting center, unit 006, there are 795 registered voters. Voters started casting their votes as at 9.30am though there were complaints from the party agents.

The security agents, especially personnel of the military, police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were on the alert.

Daily Trust reports that the presence of military personnel was more pronounced at this voting center probably due to its proximity to Defence Industries Corporation, (DICON) establishment.

At Kakuri Hausa, voting unit number 045 at Gora Street, the registered voters were 305 and there was an impressive turn out.

Recall that the Appeal Court Abuja Division had nullified the election of Liman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court ordered a rerun in five polling units following the petition of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Hon Solomon Nuhu Katuka and the PDP.

Liman’s election was nullified by the Kaduna Assembly Election Petition Tribunal on September 30 which ordered a rerun in 42 polling units, 37 in Makera ward, two in Barnawa ward, one in Kakuri Gwari ward, one in Television ward and one in Kakuri Hausa ward.

But APC and Dahiru Liman filed an appeal against the judgement of the Tribunal while they also filed a cross appeal seeking for outright declaration.
