The Osun State Police Command on Tuesday said the two suspected kidnappers that were almost lynched by a mob in Osogbo, Osun State, were mentally ill.

The suspects, a man and a woman, were apprehended by some residents of Gbodofon area for allegedly attempting to kidnap a child.

Within the blink of an eye, a huge crowd had gathered and the people started beating the suspects.

The mob stripped them naked and insisted on burning them. But the community leaders in the area called the police to intervene.

Policemen from Oja Oba Divisional Headquarters arrived at the scene on time and stopped the mob from setting the suspects ablaze.

The mob descended on the policemen for rescuing the suspects. The community leaders, however, persuaded the crowd to allow the policemen to take the suspects away.

When Daily Trust correspondent interviewed the suspects, their statements were incoherent.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, said findings revealed that the suspects could be mentally unstable.
