The Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions (ASURI) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) Bill, stressing that the bill will aid industrialisation and innovation in the country.

The union also said Nigerians would commence real research activities while they anticipated the president’s assent to the NRIC bill. The National Secretary General of ASURI, Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku, said this in Abuja while addressing the press over the weekend.

While commending the role played by Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology, in ensuring that the president inaugurated the NRIC in 2016, he said the 8th  National Assembly had played a crucial role following the inauguration with the passage of the NRIC bill. Dr. Theophilus noted that no nation could develop without science and technology and research.

He said, “The National Policy on Science and Technology was initiated in 1966. It has been reviewed 13 times, and no past president bothered to actualise it for the eventual technological revolution in Nigeria until 2016, 50 years after, when President Buhari inaugurated the NRIC; which is the driver of the policy.
