Research: Student discovers coliform in water

The department made the discovery following a research work conducted by one of its student, recently.
A total of eight (8) samples were collected from Eight (8) different boreholes located in Etsu-Yisa area of Bida.
Most of the physio-chemical parameter of the water samples where Pit, temperature colour and odour.
The lecturer in charge of the research, Mr. Mohammed Aminu King, disclosed that the research was inspired by the events happening around the various communities of Bida area council.
King stated that the essence of the research was to investigate the problem because it was prevalent in the many communities.
He said: “The results from the laboratory analysis carried out for isolation and identification of coliform bacteria in drinking water (borehole) consumed in Etsu-Yisa area of Bida town indicated that some water are fit for consumption and domestic use while some are unfit for human consumption and domestic activities. Caution should be employed in using this water.”
Regular consumption of unfit water could lead to an outbreak of water borne disease.
Also, observation supported the fact that high heterotrophic count on water contained high coliform count and presences of fecal coliforms.
King advised that borehole water used for drinking should be properly processed before use, adding that the site of drilling borehole should not be close to a latrine or a dumping site.
He said the people staying around Etsu-yisa area needed to be educated on the importance of maintaining the borehole area to ensure safety of water.
He said that Maringa seed, in powder form, can be used to purify water from the borehole before consumption.
