About 300 Sacked letters for residents doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC} Idi-aba and the Neuropsychiatric hospital Aro, both in Abeokuta, Ogun state are ready for collections, DAILYTRUST checks can reveal.
Findings however showed that the affected doctors heeded to the directive of the Nigerian Medical Association not to go and collect the letters.
The development came even as DAILYTRUST further gathered that the Federal Government and the association on Tuesday, were at crossroads over who first make pronouncement to recall the about 16,000 sacked resident doctors or calling off the about two months old strike of the association.
A visit by our Correspondent to the two federal health institutions confirmed that the sacked letters were ready. At Idi-aba, hospital spokesman, Segun Orisajo said the management had informed the affected
doctors.”But, the schedule officer was not on seat to ascertain those who had come forward to collect it.”
Similar response was received at the Neuropsychiatric hospital.
The state chairman of NMA, Dt.Nike Odewabi told our Correspondent that the call for affected members to come forward and pick the sacked letters was irrational. According to her, “when we are on strike, you
want me to still come and collect my sack letter. That is irrational.”
She put the figure at both hospitals to be about 300.
The DAILY TRUST gathered in Abeokuta yesterday that both parties appeared to have resolved contending issues resulting in the commencement of the association strike and the last week sacking of
the entire resident doctors in the country.
The NMA General Secretary, Dr. Adewumi Alayaki who confirmed this development in a telephone chat said with the situation of things, “both parties are ready to broker truce, but, because we do not believe in the sincerity of government, we would want them to firstly, retrace it step on the illegal sacking of our members, then we can also call off the strike.
Alayaki said the association is ready to also sheath it swords in the overall interest of the masses of the country, “but, as I said, government can be very funny a times. If we take the first step now, they can turn back to say there was no agreement to recall the sacked doctors. But, when we resume the meeting later today, Nigerians will know in the next 24 to 48 hours the situation of things.”
