Temporary Voter Cards (TVCs) were used for voting on Saturday by students of the University of Jos at the students hostel complex at the permanent site of the university in the Naraguta area of Jos.

The polling unit had been a subject of controversy between the students and other residents of Naraguta village who were voting in the polling unit named Student Hostel 036. Village head of Naraguta, Engineer Muhammad Bello said the students had earlier intended to cause confusion at the commencement of the exercise but when they laid complaint to election officials, they separated the polling point into two, one inside the university premises for the students and the other outside for the other residents.

Bello said: “Some few students, about 50 of them, tried to cause conflict so that our people will not vote. When we observed their mission, we laid a complaint to INEC officials and they separated the voting points. They forced the election officials to allow them to use the temporary voters card”.

Bello added: “We understand that the students are using TVCs so that the INEC will cancel the result of the unit. They want the over 400 of our people to waste their time.”
