A suspected thief allegedly terrorising residents of Karu, Jikwoyi and Kurudu communities of the FCT has been nabbed by residents, having previously escaped from police custody.

Our reporter who witnessed the incident yesterday saw angry residents who took the law into their hands and started beating up the suspect until the police intervened.

One of the residents who captured the suspect, Aminu Kabir, said he had prior interaction with the suspect.

“A few days back, he brought a television to me that I should keep it for him. I didn’t know it was a stolen property until when the police arrested me.

“I have been searching for him around the community because the police suspected that we were conniving with him to steal,” he said.

The suspect who confessed to burgling houses in the communities, said they usually steal television sets, mobile phones and other valuables.

“We are four in our gang and some of us stay in local hotels, we have a network of friends who perpetrate such criminal offences in the community,” the suspect added.

The police applauded the community’s for arresting the thief and called for more cooperation from residents.
