Residents of Wuro Dole in Gona Emirate of Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State are counting their losses following a devastating flood that destroyed homes, farmlands and other valuable property.
The flood, which displaced several families and left many residents struggling to recover from the destruction, followed a heavy downpour experienced in the community.
During an assessment visit to the affected community, the Overseer of Akko Local Government Area, Abdullahi Abdulkadir, described the incident as unfortunate and sympathised with residents over their losses.
Abdulkadir, who led a delegation comprising the Overseer of Akko West, Lamaran Ahmed; the Overseer of Akko North, Muhammad Abubakar Ajiya, and other senior officials, said the visit was aimed at assessing the extent of the damage and identifying with the victims.

He assured the affected residents that the local government was concerned about their plight and would take necessary steps to provide support.
“We are here to sympathise with the affected families and reassure them that government is aware of their situation. We will assess the losses and do everything possible to assist the victims,” he said.
He added that officials of the Social Welfare Department would conduct a detailed assessment of affected households to facilitate the provision of relief materials and other forms of assistance.
The District Head of Wuro Dole, Hussaini Ishiyaku, commended the local government delegation for the visit and appealed to government agencies, humanitarian organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the victims.
He said many residents had lost their means of livelihood and would require urgent support to rebuild their lives.
Also speaking, the member representing Akko North Constituency in the Gombe State House of Assembly, Musa Mohammed Wuro Biriji, donated N250,000 to support the affected families.
The lawmaker assured residents that he would raise the matter at the State House of Assembly to attract further government intervention and assistance for the community.
One of the victims, Ali Zarami Bakin Boda, attributed the flooding to the heavy rainfall and the blockage of a culvert, which caused water to overflow into homes and farmlands.
Another resident, Usman Munkaila, described the incident as a major disaster that had left many families homeless and in distress.
“Some families lost all their belongings, while others were left without shelter. The destruction is enormous, and many people do not know where to start from,” he said.
Munkaila appealed to governments at all levels, humanitarian organisations and public-spirited individuals to assist the victims.
The affected residents called for urgent intervention to enable them rebuild their homes, restore their livelihoods and recover from the devastating impact of the flood.
