The Ondo State Police Command has said that gunmen attacked Ipele community in Owo LGA on Wednesday night and set a police station on fire.

DSP Jimoh Kazeem, the command’s spokesperson, who disclosed this to newsmen, said, “I can confirm that there was an attack tonight at the Ipele community. The Commissioner of Police (CP) has ordered the immediate deployment of officers, including tactical teams, to the area.

“The gunmen burnt a police station, but the church was not affected. The command will provide more details after a proper briefing.”

It was gathered that the attackers, numbering about 20, stormed the community around 10pm, shot sporadically, forcing residents to flee their homes.

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said, “It was a terrorist attack. About 20 attackers entered Ipele and began shooting before targeting the police station. Many of us had to flee into the bush. The sound of the gunfire was terrifying, and no one could withstand it.”

While the police facility was razed during the attack, the witness noted that the motive behind the assault remained unknown. (NAN)
