Residents of the Oyigbo urban community in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State have expressed joy over the commencement of work on the dilapidated Oyigbo/Afam road.
The road had been in a terrible state forcing many residents to relocate.
Similarly, many commercial transporters have moved away from the route to avoid damage to their vehicles, while those who still plying the road have jerked up their fare by 100 per cent.
Niger Delta Trust had reported the plight of residents of the area.
The commencement of reconstruction work on the road has brought joy to the residents who commended the state government for fulfilling its promise to rehabilitate.
Media Officer of the Ministry of Works, Paul Bazia confirmed to our reporter that the ministry has mobilised a contractor to commence work on the site.
Some of the residents, who spoke with our reporter expressed joy that work has commenced and commended the government for coming to the aid of residents.
Mrs Joy Ngbochi said reconstruction work on the road will bring relief to hundreds of residents who ply the road on a daily basis.
“We are happy with Rivers State Government for commencing work on this road. The poor state of this road has brought untold hardship to many of the residents who ply the road on a daily basis.
She commended the state government for fulfilling its promise and urged it to ensure that the project is delivered on time.
Another resident, Thankgod Uche, said the reconstruction of the road will boost economic activities in the area.
“There has been a lull in economic activities along the stretch of road and the entire Oyigbo since the road collapsed,’’ he said.
Another resident, Uwem Obong, said he moved out of his house at Kom kom because of the poor state of the road.
“I packed out of my house at Kom kom because of the poor state of the road. I have moved out and have since then been putting up with my brother because I cannot cope with the cost of transporting myself through the road,” he said.
