Residents in Kumbotso and Gwale local government areas of Kano state have been urged to engage their local governments’ chairmen and members of the state assembly from the areas on the issue of maternal mortality with a view to minimizing the number of women dying during childbirth.
The Director, Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), Ibrahim Zikrullah made the call at the launching of the centre’s project on fostering local government development with focus on maternal mortality in the state.
Zikrullah said the rate at which women were dying during childbirth was worrisome, hence, the need for people to engage their elected officials on the issue to address the situation.
“A close look at recent maternal mortality cases from various studies shows that the figures for Kano state are higher than the average at the national and geo-political zone levels,” he said.
He said the project would empower and build the capacity of women leaders and activists in the community to enable them engage their elected leaders effectively.
He added that all stakeholders must join heads together  to address the problem.
