Residents of Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State have called on the federal government to award the contract for the immediate reconstruction of Kaduna-Birnin Gwari-Tegina highway as well as the Birnin Gwari-Funtua highway to curtail insecurity.
The residents said the roads, which are in deplorable state with so many potholes, contribute to the high cases of armed robbery and kidnapping in the area.

The chairman, Birnin Gwari Progressive Union (BEPU), Barrister Salisu Haruna, said that due to banditry along the roads, travellers found it risky to move freely as from 4pm.
He said the reconstruction would significantly restore peace and security along the highways.
“Mr President, as we are writing this letter, you should be informed that no commuter drives along Kaduna-Birnin Gwari highway or Birnin Gwari-Funtua highway once it is 4 pm due to fear of kidnappers who demand and forcefully collect nothing less than N15 million from their victims,” he said.
The union commended the vigilante group and self-defence initiatives in Birnin Gwari and Zamfara for complementing the efforts made by the army and the police to improve security in the area.
He explained that the vigilante had on several occasions confronted and chased away armed bandits and kidnappers.
