Retired school principals ask Ambode to clear delayed pensions, gratuities

The Lagos State chapter of the Association of Retired Principals of Secondary Schools of Nigeria (ARPSSON) has appealed to the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to assist in clearing their delayed pensions and gratuities.

The association’s state coordinator, Kola Sodeinde, stated this while speaking to the Teachers’ Resource Centre, Ikorodu, Lagos.Although he commended the efforts of the state government, insisted that many retirees were experiencing hardship because they were still being owed their pensions and gratuities.

“It is obvious that the Lagos State government has invested on us during our service years in terms of several trainings, workshops and seminars, both within and outside the country. We want to thank our amiable Governor Ambode for the regular payment of retirees’ gratuities and bonds.

“However, we are appealing that the gradual payment is hastened. It is inhuman to delay the pension and gratuities for up to three years and above. The development is dehumanizing many retirees,” Sodeinde said.

He lamented that the Nigerian society didn’t take care of old people who he said had contributed immensely to the progress and development of the country during their active service years.

“We want to call on the government at all levels to change their attitudes to the senior citizens in this regard,” he said.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr (Mrs) Idiat Oluranti Adebule, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Teachers Establishment and Pension Office (TEPO), Mrs Semiat  Adeleye, assured the retirees that the state government would continue to give priority to education.

“It is only by putting in place sustainable reforms that quality and functional education delivery in the state can be actualized,” Adebule said.
