Former President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Adams Oshiomhole, has urged industrial unions in Nigeria to prioritise training of members at all levels for them to remain relevant in modern day reality.

The former Governor of Edo State said training and retraining of members would enable them understand the complexity of policies and how they would impact on public welfare.

He advised industrial unions to establish research unit to be manned by experts, saying this would impact on the world of work. 

Oshiomhole said, “A union leader must be jack of all trade and master of all. He must necessarily have answers to questions. How is he going to have answers to all questions?  He must have the basic training and sufficient level of exposure. 

“As the world becomes more digitalized, the character of the struggle will move increasingly to battle of ideas, and no longer about your capacity to disrupt. With current technologies, there are systems that you can remote controlled. So, physical action would not be as potent as it used to be years ago. To cope with the challenges of the digital world in which fewer workers are turning out huge output, the capacity to threaten the employers including the state in the traditional way, the tools have to change.”
