The Rivers State chapter of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria(TUC) has said  the occupational health and safety laws in Nigeria are outdated, grossly inadequate.
Chairman of the Rivers State chapter , Comrade Chika Unegbu, said there is  urgent need for the government to review the laws and strengthen the legislations around occupational health and safety in Nigeria.
He said: “Unfortunately the Occupational Safety and Health Bill 2012 which was passed by the Senate in September 2012 was not assented to by the then president. So we call on the current National Assembly to reintroduce the bill and commence discussion with a view to passing it into law before the end of 2016.”
He urged employers of labour in the country to take urgent steps to reduce workplace stress to the barest minimum.
He said high stress levels can contribute to developing health-related impairment and unhealthy coping behaviours.
