Rex Obiora Onyeabo: An Iroko has fallen

I received with sadness the shocking, incredible and terrible news of the transition to the great beyond of another Igbo great son and compatriot, an iroko and patriotic Nigerian, as well as a prominent member of the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, Chief (Sir) Rex Onyeabo, Ijere, Enugu.

A retired Permanent Secretary and former National Secretary, Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Onyeabo served Nigeria in different capacities and held many other sensitive positions at the state and national levels.

It is important to remember that Sir Onyeabo lost his beautiful and dependable wife to the cold hand of death last year after a brief illness.

He was, before his demise, a member of Imeobi (now Igbo Elders Consultative Forum) and a former President General and Member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of Enugu State Indigenes General Assembly, Abuja. He was also a recipient of the Life Patron Award at the last Enugu State Day held on 6th December, 2024.

He was an engineering alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University, United States of America (U.S.A), and on returning to Nigeria, was committed to public service

The Enugu State, the Igbo community in Abuja, and indeed the nation at large have lost an Iroko, a great Icon.

Further announcements will follow after due consultations with the family.

Oh Lord, let Perpetual Light shine upon him.

May the Lord grant his soul a perfect, eternal rest.

May God grant his immediate family and the rest of us the fortitude to bear his irreparable loss in Jesus’ name.

Adieu Ijele, Nwoke Oma.

Prof Charles Nwekeaku is the Secretary of the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, FCT
