Angela Uwandu, Head of office ASFF, revealed this at the end of the third phase of the Saving Lives (SALI) project, a human rights focused programme geared towards creating awareness about humane alternatives to the death penalty in the Nigerian justice system.
She explained that the amendment of the nation’s laws can only come about when there is a comprehensive and consistent system in place that creates awareness and sensitisation of the dangers of relying heavily on the death penalty as the sole punishment for capital crimes.
According to her, the enforcement of the death penalty in Nigeria so far had not deterred crime and thus the Nigerian criminal justice system needs to explore viable alternatives to death penalty.
