A coalition of human rights activists who gathered to mark the sixth anniversary of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s death  in Lagos yesterday restated calls for his immortalisation.
The activists who gathered under the aegis of the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMOG) held a rally from the Ikeja Under- Bridge and marched to the Fawehinmi Freedom Square in Ojota.
Their chairman, Ayodele Akele, said the Buhari administration should acknowledge the contributions of late Gani Fawehinmi to the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria and immortalise him.
“Gani lived a worthy life. He fought oppression and despotic leaders, and insisted on the rights of the people. We are calling on President Muhammadu who we believe is also a beneficiary of Gani’s selfless services for democracy, to name public institutions after him. A national monument such as the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Abuja should be named after him,” Akele said.
National President of Women Arise, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, also said Gani’s fight must never be in vain.
“The little we can do for him as a nation and a people is to keep celebrating the worthy life he lived. Those in positions of authority should deem it fit to acknowledge his selfless service. By that, we would be sending a signal to the populace that it is right to stand for something good”, Odumakin said.
