The number of diabetes cases in Jigawa State has risen from 4,317 in 2012 to 16,169 last year; according to a national health management information survey has shown.
The state commissioner for health, Dr. Abba Zakari made this known yesterday at event to mark this year’s World Health Day in Dutse, the state capital, stressing that development would put more pressure on the health system.
The commissioner, who was represented by the director planning, research and statistics, Dr. Mohammad Kainuwa, said it was based on this reason that the state government planned to establish a diabetic clinic in Raheed Shekoni Specialist Hospital and in all the general hospitals in the state.
He said the disease is treatable if diagnosed early, saying government would continue to educate diabetic patients on the type of diets to place themselves on.
“Educating and sensitising members of the public is necessary because the disease is treatable if early diagnosed and also to educate the patients on the type of food they will take,” he stated.
