Rising food cost during harvest season alarming – Senator Hussaini

Senator Babangida Hussaini, representing Jigawa North in the 10th Senate, has expressed concerns over the rising cost of food commodities, noting that prices continue to soar even during the harvest season.

Hussaini, who chairs the Senate Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), warned that if thE trend remains unchecked, it could threaten national food security and stability.

“The cost of basic food items is rising dramatically across rural communities in the Northern states and other parts of the country.

“This is particularly concerning as we enter the harvest season, when food crops would typically become more affordable. The economic burden on citizens is alarming,” Hussaini said.

He attributed the surge in food prices partly to insecurity, banditry, and other criminal activities disrupting major food-producing regions, which exacerbates the issue of food security.

“This concerning trend needs urgent intervention,” he said, cautioning that failure to act may lead to severe repercussions for national food security and overall stability.

Senator Hussaini called on federal, state, and local governments, alongside relevant stakeholders, to implement strategic measures to mitigate the crisis for the benefit of the nation.

He also urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at steering the country toward sustainable economic growth and long-term prosperity.
