The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has pledged to cooperate with Governor Siminalayi Fubara when he resumes office on September 18, after the expiration of the state of emergency.

APC State Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, gave the assurance in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, saying the party and its newly elected chairmen in 20 local government areas would work with the governor but would not hesitate to criticise him when necessary.

“The governor will return on September 18. APC will work with him when he does, but that will not take away our right to criticise him where he goes wrong. Our LGA chairmen will cooperate with him, except on vicious policies,” Okocha said.

He described the August 30 council polls, where APC won 20 out of 23 LGAs, as a prelude to the 2027 general election, stressing that the party is determined to make Rivers an APC stronghold. He said Rivers APC, once “without shoes”, had now become a force and would double its membership ahead of 2027 to deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

Okocha also disclosed plans to woo more stakeholders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, state lawmakers and other influential figures into the APC fold.

He noted that the party did not field candidates in Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs, explaining it focused on areas where it had comparative strength.
