The Rivers State Executive Council has approved the immediate recruitment of 5,000 indigenes into the state civil service to boost administrative efficiency and public service delivery.

The decision was taken during the second council meeting of 2026, presided over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara at Government House, Port Harcourt, with Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu in attendance.

Speaking to journalists, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honor Sirawoo, said the recruitment targets the education sector to address manpower needs. With this intake, over 9,500 people will have been employed under the Fubara administration.

“The State Executive Council approved the employment of 5,000 people into the civil service to strengthen service delivery, especially in education. Of this number, 300 will serve at the basic and primary levels, while 2,000 will be posted to post-primary institutions,” Sirawoo explained.

He noted that previous recruitment under the administration included 1,500 staff for Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, 2,000 for medical services, and 1,000 for the Universal Basic Education Board. The process will be strictly guided to ensure only qualified candidates are employed.

The State Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, Dr. Chisom Kenneth Gbali, described the recruitment as a major boost for residents.
