Table-toppers Rivers United failed to open the gap on closest rivals Enugu Rangers after they were beaten 0-1 by Niger Tornadoes in yesterday’s Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) rescheduled week 26 match at the Bako Kotangora Stadium in Minna.

Although the “Pride of Rivers” on 52 points wanted to win their last outstanding match to move away from Rangers who are trailing them with a point, they were undone by a former Lobi Stars and Nasarawa United striker, Terdoo Shimagande, who scored the winner for Tornadoes in the 67th minute.

The visitors also ended the contest with 10 players after their striker, Maclyn Biokpo Jenewari, was sent off in the second half stoppage-time for a second yellow card.

It will be recalled that Rivers United who represented Nigeria in the CAF Champions League had accumulated five fixtures which were rescheduled by the NPFL board soon after they crashed out of the continental competition.

In the five rescheduled matches, Rivers United drew 1-1 at Kwara United, recorded a slim 1-0 victory against Barau FC, thrashed El-Kanemi Warriors 3-0, and lost 1-2 at 3SC before losing 0-1 to Niger Tornadoes in the last rescheduled match.

So, Rivers United managed to pick only seven points out 15 points that were up for grabs.

Meanwhile, both Niger Tornadoes and Rivers United will turn attention to their week 31 matches this weekend against Abia Warriors and Nasarawa United respectively.
