Rivers United have earned their seventh victory of the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League season with a 3-0 win over Wikki Tourists and moved to the top of the table.
Seeking to take the top spot, Rivers United had the first chance in the 26th minute following a brilliant display of passes between Paul Acquah and Nyima Nwagua who fires a shot that hits the side net.
Their efforts to win the game paid off when Chijioke Akuneto was brought down inside the box after a quick corner kick and the resulting penalty kick was scored by Chidiebude Duru in the 36th minute from the penalty spot.
In the 54th minute, Akuneto Chijioke doubled the lead and two minutes later, the Port Harcourt-based club made it 3-0 after Uche Onwuasonaya volleyed home from Ebube Duru’s cross to further extend the lead of Rivers.
In the other game, ten-man Enyimba were unable to get the maximum points against Niger Tornadoes as they settled for a 1-1 draw.
The People’s Elephant first chance at goal was thwarted by the woodwork after Samuel Kalu brilliantly weaved his way past Adeyinka Najeem before crossing low inside the box where Ekene Awazie, unmarked hit his effort against the crossbar and to safety.
But in the 39th minute and against the run of play, Tornadoes’ Kabiru Adeniji stunned their hosts to open the lead.
With the first half about to end, Enyimba were gifted a penalty after Niger Tornadoes GK Lucky Abdullahi spilled Emeka Obioma’s shot before fouling Victor Mbaoma who was latching onto the rebound.
The penalty was well taken as captain Austin Oladapo hits the penalty straight down the middle to restore parity for the hosts.
In the third match of the day, Katsina United secured a slim 1-0 win over Kwara United to earn their fifth win of the season.
