A tragic road accident along the Kano–Katsina highway has claimed 12 lives following a head-on collision between a trailer and a vehicle operating under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with the Katsina State Transport Authority.
The accident occurred at Gidan Mutum Daya at about 8.30pm on Sunday.
It was gathered that six victims, including the driver, died at the scene, while another six later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.
Two injured persons are currently receiving treatment at Katsina General Hospital, while five others who sustained minor injuries were treated and discharged.
Katsina State governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as devastating and painful.
The governor, in a statement by his media aide, Ibrahim Kaula, said the state had lost valuable citizens under unfortunate circumstances.
Governor Radda lamented that the tragedy occurred during the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah, a period regarded as sacred in Islam, noting that the timing had further deepened the grief among families and the Muslim community.
“We have lost precious lives in a heartbreaking and unfortunate circumstance. This tragedy is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and has plunged our state into mourning,” the governor said.
He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the deceased and asked for strength and comfort for their families to bear the loss.
Governor Radda also urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly adhere to road safety regulations to prevent similar incidents.
“On behalf of the Katsina State Government and the people of the state, I extend my condolences to the bereaved families, the management and staff of the Katsina State Transport Authority, and all those affected by this tragedy,” the governor said.
