Road rehabilitation will boost food production, say FCT farmers

Rural farmers in Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed relief over the ongoing rehabilitation of the Gawu–Gasakpa road.

Some of the farmers, who spoke with Abuja Metro on Saturday, said the project, initiated under the administration of the council chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, would ease the transportation of farm produce to markets.

They noted that the road, which had long been a nightmare especially during the rainy season, is now receiving the attention it deserves.

A farmer, Suleiman Isah, said the rehabilitation, when completed, would significantly boost food production and economic activities in the area.

He added that farmers, whose major occupation is agriculture, would experience relief during the next harvest season, as they would be able to transport their produce with ease. Another farmer, Saidu Ibrahim, noted that the road also links neighbouring communities in Niger State, adding that its improvement would encourage more people to engage in farming this season.

He described the project as timely and commended the council authorities for prioritising rural infrastructure.

“What the locals want is not too much—just good access roads to transport crops to nearby markets, schools, health centres, and access to water. The chairman deserves praise for this effort,” he said.

Findings by Abuja Metro indicate that the ongoing rehabilitation of the Gawu–Gasakpa Road, including the construction of drainage systems on both sides, is being handled by an indigenous contractor.
