Robbers attack journalists in Nasarawa

Suspected armed robbers yesterday attacked some members of the Nasarawa state Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists along Nassarawa-Eggon/Akwanga road. The members who were coming from an official engagement were reportedly robbed in Lili village of Nassarawa Eggon LGA aboard correspondents’ chapel bus alongside their driver.

One of the victims, Cheke Emmanuel said the robbers attacked them near an abandoned police checkpoint in Lili. “We thought they were security personnel because the spot used to be a police checkpoint, but before we realized they ordered us to lie down flat on the road and surrender our handsets, monkey and other valuables.”

The Chairman of Correspondents Chapel, Abubakar Suleiman, decried the increase cases of robberies on the highways in the state adding that the government should rise up to its responsibility of securing the state. He appealed to security operatives to beef up security and surveillance to apprehend the robbers.

When contacted, Acting Police Public Relation Officer, Nasarawa state, ASP Samaila Usman, asked for time to verify the reports of the incident from the DPO in charge of Nasarawa Eggon division and Call back to respond on the matter but failed to do so. He however failed to pick up calls nor return several calls to his number as at press time.
