Armed robbers struck on Wednesday evening at a bank in Igede, Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, killing an official of the bank and a private security guard.

Daily Trust gathered that the seven-man gang stormed the old generation bank at about 5.50pm and executed their operation for about 15 minutes.

A witness told our correspondent that the robbers riddled the bank’s Automated Tellers Machine (ATM) with bullets.

The witness said that the robbers actually gained entry into the banking hall before the police confronted them in a shoot-out, but could not ascertain the robbers successfully carted away money.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Caleb Ikechukwu, who confirmed the incident to journalists yesterday, said there was an exchange of gunfire between policemen and the robbers but regretted that the robbers escaped.

Ikechukwu added that the guard, who he said the robbers shot in the head, died within the bank’s premises, while the staff died in the hospital.

The PPRO said the robbers were forced to divert from the Ilawe-Igede road through which they had intended to escape, and drove into the bush, escaping into the thick forest between the two towns.
