The Rotary Club of Abuja Gudu has paid the parent teachers association (PTA) levies, donate school uniform, text and note books, bags and other educational materials, to 150 pupils of LEA Primary School, Angwan Fulani, Gaduwa Abuja.

Kelechi Udenwa, President Rotary Club of Abuja Gudu, at the event on Saturday also said that over 120 women were empowered, while a medical outreach was also offered children and adults in the community.

“Today, we are sending a minimum of 150 children back to school and we found out that the numbers are increasing by the moment, so we’re sending them back to school for the 2024/2025 academic session. We are providing them with books and uniforms. We are paying their PTA levy for the year and also providing them with school bags and writing materials, pens, pencils, erasers and all the other things that is needed.

“For the disease prevention, we are deworming all the kids in the community, we have so dewormed 150 today, and we’re also providing them with some hygiene kits for their personal use,” Udenwa said.

She said that the organisation also conduct testing and counseling for mothers and fathers, diagnosing for high blood pressure, sugar-level, hepatitis and HIV/AIDS.

The President Rotary Club of Abuja Gudu added that the project was with the support of Silver Cross Hospital, who brought a team of doctors and nurses to carry out the health part of the project, free of charge, commending Doctor Patrick for the gesture.

She said, “And then we also are doing the economic empowerment, we have trained 120 women today, on how to produce soap so this they can now use for their personal use, and they can also sell, because we made 100 liters that they can be used for sales.

“All this, and we want to say thanks to our major sponsor today, the United Bank of Africa (UBA), who have supported us greatly in ensuring that we are able to achieve our goal for today.”

Udenwa said that over N5m was spent and that the monies spent on the project came from club members, some donations from benefactors and some other goodwill like the medical doctors providing free services.

She urged the FCT and federal government to do more for the people in the grassroots and suburbs.

She said, “We have provided a lot of things, inclusive of the water you can see, the borehole and all of that. We have been able to do those sort of things, provided toilet for them. We provided a classroom blocks for them as well, all thanks to the Rotary Club of Abuja Gudu.

“But we actually need the government to do more, because the government is a bigger body with bigger resources, and they can do more to uplift this community out of the current state, which the community is asking for.”

She also urged corporate organizations and individuals who have the ability to support to also lend a helping hand to such communities. “We thanked the ones who have always been our supporter as well. We also ask that those who are able to, even if it’s sponsoring a child from primary school to university.

“One of the thing the community actually needs is a health facility. So, if that can be done for this community a lot of disease prevention can be achieved.”
